Dundee pupils trade time in class for career insight

Posted: June 26, 2017

Students at a Dundee school found out about career opportunities with one of Tayside’s largest trades employers during a session at Braeview Academy last week.

The fifth and six year pupils received information from staff from across the Hillcrest Group of Companies including recruitment staff, Hillcrest Maintenance Services’ (HMS) trades supervisors and young employees.

Hillcrest’s director of property, Mark Percival said: “It is really important for us to engage with young people at the stage where they are starting to choose what careers to follow.”

“A trades career with Hillcrest Maintenance Services can be extremely rewarding and hopefully many of the pupils are keen to pursue this in the future.”

“We are always on the look out for new talent and our apprentices are encouraged to work their way up through the company and several have been shortlisted for Apprentice of the Year awards.”

During the event, in addition to having the opportunity to discuss careers in gas engineering, plumbing, joinery and painting, pupils also had the chance to explorer a fully kitted out trades van.

Ryan Laird, Braeview Academy’s deputy head teacher said: “This partnership with HMS will add to the partnerships we have in place already.

“Our pupils will benefit immensely from being involved with HMS and will have opportunities to develop skills for learning, life and work as well as gaining an in depth understanding of business.

“This partnership, in its infancy is very exciting for our school and we look forward to building a strong partnership which will benefit all parties.”

The session was delivered in partner between Hillcrest Maintenance Services, Braeview Academy and Developing the Young Workforce (DYW).

DYW employer liaison advisor, Claire Gammie said: It is great to see Hillcrest actively participating in the DYW agenda by engaging with young people at this level.

“Staff have worked hard with Braeview Academy to deliver an initial session with the pupils that will make a positive impact for all concerned.”

In addition to the information session, several pupils will be given the opportunity to have work experience with Hillcrest Maintenance Services and future sessions are being planned.
