Alex Neil, Minister for Housing and Communities, was in Dundee today to officially open Hillcrest Housing Association’s development at Kirk Street. The Kirk St development was designed for general & special needs housing to meet Dundee City Council re-housing requirements associated with their demolition programmed of excess sub standard council housing within the city.

John Mulloy, Hillcrest Group Chief Executive commented that “This is Hillcrest’s most innovative and energy efficient development ever. We are very pleased to be leading the way on a new method of housing construction which has a number of anticipated benefits.”

The development includes two properties which use an innovative method of construction. One property incorporates a powerwall system which allows the house to be constructed in a factory setting before being placed on site. The other incorporates a Scotframe Supawall panel system allowing doors and windows to be fitted prior to arriving on site. Both methods allow a sustainable and energy efficient type of construction to be tried and tested.

John Mulloy continued, “We hope that a lot can be learned from the experience to allow this form of house construction to be mainstreamed into all housing sectors. Hillcrest is committed to promoting energy efficiency and finding more sustainable ways of working.”

Another feature of the development is a communal garden area to be enjoyed by all tenants. This provides a semi private focal point for community activity and child play assisting in the generation of a stable yet interactive neighbourhood.
