Hillcrest is Ready, Steady, Go4SET in Supporting Dundee School Pupils
Under the guidance and support of Hillcrest Housing Association’s Health, Safety and Sustainability Coordinator, Janice Fraser, S2 pupils at Dundee’s Braeview Academy have been undertaking the Go4SET Project. Go4SET links teams of S2 pupils with companies and universities to offer a 10 week science, engineering and technology experience. Pupils complete a project designed to raise their awareness and interest in the aforementioned industries.
With this year’s project being the ECO Classroom pupils have been looking at the way buildings are constructed and managed as this directly impacts on the environment. As part of the pupils’ research into this, they were given a tour of the new Hillcrest headquarters; which is in the final stages of development on Explorer Road, Dundee.
Janice Fraser commented that “I was a mentor on previous Go4SET Projects and it was a great experience for both the pupils and Hillcrest, however the timing on this project could not have been better: with the pupils researching sustainable and environmentally friendly buildings when at Hillcrest we are completing our new HQ.”
Incorporating a number of sustainable design elements, the new Hillcrest HQ has been constructed with a predominantly timber frame, floors and roof structures, will utilise natural ventilation and solar shading, a biomass heating system and through the use of natural and recycled materials both internally and externally.
This Go4SET project comes to a close on the 17th of December, when there will be a Celebration and Assessment day held in the University of Dundee’s Dalhousie Building.
